Homesteading Animals

Our Homestead Chickens

These are our first batch of meat chickens in 2020.

Of course like a lot of new homesteaders we decided to dive right in!

Trevor had a bit of experience with meat chickens before we got these ones. But I didn’t have a clue on how to take care of them, so I did all the research (reading and watching You Tube) until they arrived.

We ordered 150 and we had 50 Heritage breeds coming just a week after we received our meat chickens.

Let me tell you it was a huge learning curve, and learning as I go. We were very lucky we only lost one chick out of all of them.

These are our Heritage Breed we ordered 50 and ended up with 50 more! We had 32 Roosters and the rest were hens. I think that was a great ratio for our first initial batch of Heritage birds.
